NOAA’s Aerosol Monitoring
Program (cont’d)
Measurements of aerosol properties began at CMDL in the mid-
1970s with stations at Point Barrow (Alaska), Mauna Loa
(Hawaii), American Samoa, and the South Pole.  Since 1992,
CMDL has been expanding its aerosol measurement program to
include monitoring stations designed to obtain representative
regional measurements of aerosol properties in areas directly
impacted by human activities.  These regional monitoring
stations use similar sampling methodology which includes
relative humidity control (< 40%) and the use of two aerosol size
cuts: less than 1 mm diameter and less than 10 mm diameter.
