The files in this directory facilitate the use of a USB flash drive for transferring data from a LiveCPD aerosol sampling system to the NOAA/ESRL/GMD ftp server for automatic processing. Please direct questions about these procedures to John Ogren at CMDL +1(303)497-6210, John.A.Ogren@noaa.gov. A. CONFIGURATION (only need to do this once) 1. Any USB flash drive can be used for data transfer. We recommend a formatted, empty drive of 64 MB or greater capacity. 2. Copy all directories and files that are in the same directory as this readme.txt file to the root directory of the new flash drive. 3. Edit the file 'ftp2cmdl.txt' on the USB drive, and replace the string 'nil' with the three-letter designator of the station (lower case). 4. Configure the LiveCPD system to use the USB drive for data transfers, by typing 'stn2usb -s STN' at the Linux command prompt, where 'STN' is the three-letter designator of the station (lower case). 5. To restore the LiveCPD system to use the internet connection for data transfers, type 'stn2usb -x -s STN' at the Linux command prompt, where 'STN' is the three-letter designator of the station (lower case). B. OPERATION 1. Insert the flash drive into one of the empty USB expansion ports on the rear of the aerosol rack. WARNING: Do not disturb the flash drive that is permanently plugged into the USB expansion port. 2. Click on the icon "Send Data" on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. 3. Wait a couple of minutes for the data to be archived and copied to the flash drive. 4. Remove the flash drive. 5. Plug the flash drive into a computer that is connected to the internet. This example assumes that the computer runs the Windows operating system. 6. Double-click on "MyComputer", double-click on the "LocalDrive" icon for the flash drive, double-click on "SendData.bat". This will send the data files in the "send" directory on the flash drive to the NOAA/CMDL ftp server. 7. An editor window will open after the files are transferred. The first section of the window will contain a list of the files to transfer, and the second section will contain the transcript of the file transfer session. Examine the transcript and verify that all the files were transferred successfully. 8. If all the files were transferred successfully, delete all the files in the "send" directory on the flash drive. 9. Eject the flash drive, remove it from the computer, and take it back to the station.
