South Pole is as far South as you can get! It's also cold (temperature was -35 F (-50F with windchill) while I was there) and at ~10000 ft. Current SPO weather (scroll down). But the sun never set and there were warm cookies 24/7 and lots of great people so not a bad place to be.

Welcome to South Pole. The building in the back is the main station where people sleep, eat meals, play (music, games, sports) and some people work in this building too.

Yup - the real South Pole - it moves each year with the ice (~30 feet/year)

There is also a 'tourist' or ceremonial South Pole. (kindof looks like it should be at the North Pole with Santa!)

The trip was so I could work on some instruments. They are in the AERO building which is in the clean air sector about ~1/2 mile from the main station.
Our instruments are the stuff in the back of the room. Note the Christmas lights and couches. We watched a movie out here one night.
Climbing the tower - i went up to take some pictures, but ended up helping get some stuff done.

This shows the wings of the station building - there are 3 wings with dorms and 1 wing has the gym. The plume is emissions from the station power plant.
The circular structure on the end of the station is called the beercan. To get to and from work I utilized the beercan. The beercan also provides access to the ice tunnels which have the clean and waste water pipes for the station
The station is on legs so snow can blow under instead of drifting. It doesn't work perfectly so there is also an option for jacking up the station every few years. The fun thing about snow drifting is that on my way home from work i got to slide down a big drift to get to the door in the beer can

You can get a feel for how much drifting snow there is by looking at this picture of the logistics and fuel arches. The logistics arch is where the station food is stored (it's like a giant frozen CostCo). The fuel arch is where the jetfuel is stored that powers everything (power plant, vehicles) on station. If you look at the larger version of the pictures you can see how big the arches relative to a pair of snow cats.
