Summit, Greenland

I was up there for 4-5 days working in this building (it's called TAWO for Temporary Atmospheric Watch Observatory). TAWO has got tall legs because the snow drifts a lot. Right before I got there they had raised the building another 10-12 feet by adding another segment to the legs. The building had been almost level with the snow before they raised it.
TAWO is in what is called the 'clean air sector' which means that it's about 1/2 mile from the main part of camp. Snowmobiles and other machinery aren't allowed near TAWO because their emissions might interfere with the atmospheric measurements being made. It was a lovely walk a few times a day. This picture was taken from the deck of TAWO looking back towards the rest of camp. The building you can see is called 'the Big House' and it's the common area where we ate meals and generally hung out when we weren't working or sleeping. The flags you can see are to guide people between TAWO and the main camp when it's dark or visibility is bad.
During the summertime there are a lot more people at Summit Camp than there are warm, toasty, inside places to sleep. They set up what they call Tent City to house the people who aren't sleeping inside. You also notice the conveniently placed outhouse in the center of the picture. We were encouraged to have a 'pee bottle' so we didn't have to crawl out of the tent in the middle of the night if we didn't want to. The tents are double walled but aren't heated. Better than being outside though!! It was chilly at night. I ended up borrowing a second sleeping bag from someone who had a spare and putting it inside my first sleeping bag so I was warm enough to sleep.
