There's lots of stuff to do in McMurdo. Being stuck there without work and somewhat abysmal internet was kind of like being at adult summer camp. Click on any picture to enlarge
The ob tube - it's like a man hole drilled through the sea ice.
You climb down into it but the hole is so small you can't wear your big jacket (which probably has your camera in the pocket...doh!). Luckily you can search for 'ob tube mcmurdo' and see some images. Here's a video
Once you are under the sea ice (about 10' thick) the sides of the ob tube are plexiglass so you have a 360 view under the ice. You can see fish and other sea critters. If you are lucky you see a seal (I wasn't lucky). The bottom of the sea ice was amazing crystals. Everything is lit by the sun coming through the ice.
There's a mountain in town that you can climb up or walk around (it's ~3 miles). I walked around. The flat part is sea ice. I *think* the rock is volcanic.
Pressure ridges in the sea ice. Here's a page with MUCH better pressure ridge pictures.
Another view of town, looking over the heliport
View toward Discovery Point. This is where Scott's hut is - the original hut from 1911...still with some of the original food.
How to figure out if you are stuck in McMurdo or flying out as scheduled...
C-130 - note the skis instead of wheels - need them for landing on the snow at the South Pole. (The McMurdo airstrips are on the sea ice so you can land with wheels.)
Mount Erebus is an active volcano kind of close (30 miles?) to McMurdo.
