JAXA’s Greenhouse Gases Monitoring Activities in Support of Carbon Cycle Science and Climate Monitoring

Collecting greenhouse gas (GHG) data has been the basis for establishing and advancing carbon cycle science, and now has also become crucial for climate monitoring. As one of the pioneering institutions for GHG remote sensing, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) continues contributing to such key data collection activities through remote sensing approaches. Recently, JAXA has developed a new CO2 and CH4 column data product from Japan’s Greenhouse gas Observing Satellite (GOSAT) observations. Our retrieval method utilizes Thermal InfraRed (TIR) band data in addition to ShortWave InfraRed (SWIR) band data that are often used in existing GOSAT retrievals. Our new retrieval provides partial column data for the upper and lower troposphere (Figure 1). We expect the two-layer GHG information to enhance our capability to study surface carbon fluxes, including emissions from anthropogenic sources. JAXA has also started a new commercial aircraft-based GHG data collection project, called the Greenhouse gas Observations of Biospheric and Local Emissions from the Upper sky (GOBLEU), in collaboration with ANA HOLDINGS Inc. We developed a carry-on sized instrument to measure CO2, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and Solar-Induced Fluorescence (SIF). Currently, the new “passenger” instrument is on a single domestic flight route (Tokyo/Haneda - Fukuoka). We expect to extend the observation coverage and collect data for monitoring Japan’s climate mitigation progress.
