Department of Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology (EEOB) Description: The mission of the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology is to provide high qua lity, comprehensive programs in undergraduate and graduate instruction, to generate and disseminate knowledge gained through original research, and to provide service to the University and professional and public sectors. As one of six departments in the College, the Department contributes to the mission of the College in the areas of teaching, research and service in evolutionary biology, organismal biology, and ecology. In keeping with the University's mission, the department is committed to the goal of promoting diversity. Formal classroom courses and original research focus on a broad spectrum of topics. The Department is particularly focused on understanding basic processes that affect the evolution, physiology, behavior, and population biology of organisms, as well as species interactions and ecosystem function. The faculty, staff, and students focus on fundamental concepts and theory at levels of organization ranging from molecular to global. Added on: 08-Aug-2005 Hits: 27

Department of Geography - University of Toronto Description: The University of Toronto's Department of Geography is one of the oldest and largest geography departments in North America. Founded in 1935, the department offers programs leading towards both B.A. and B.Sc. degrees at the undergraduate level and M.A., M.Sc., M.Sc. in Planning, and Ph.D. degrees at the graduate level (Geography and Program in Planning). Currently there are over 2500 undergraduate students enrolled in geography courses each term on the St. George campus. There are almost 150 graduate students in the department. Earth Sciences Division Description: Research in earth and atmospheric sciences is becoming increasingly important in light of the energy, climate change, and environmental issues facing the United States and the world. The development of new energy resources other than hydrocarbons and the safe disposal of nuclear waste and greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide and methane) are critical to the future energy needs and environmental safety of this planet. In addition, the cleanup of many contaminated sites in the U.S., along with the preservation and management of our water supply, remain key challenges for us as well as future generations. Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Description: In 1990 Princeton University divided Biology into the Departments of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Molecular Biology. Since then we have grown and now consist of 18 faculty, approximately 40 graduate students, 45 postdoctoral fellows, and about 100 undergraduate concentrators. Our offices and laboratories are located in Guyot and Eno Halls, but our research often takes us to field sites in Africa, Asia and parts of North, Central and South America. Although faculty and students in the Department study a wide range of biological problems, evolution is the theme that unites us, and mixing of theory and empiricism is a style that guides us. And despite our breadth, we are deep in the areas of ecology, evolution and behavior. Many of the research projects are interdisciplinary and have resulted in strong links to the Department of Molecular Biology, Princeton’s Environmental Institute (PEI) and the Woodrow Wilson School’s Program in Science Technology and Environmental Policy (STEP). The excitement and quality of the research that is done in the Department creates an exceptional learning environment for undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students. We invite you to learn more about our research activities by exploring links to the faculty and to the activities in each of our core areas—Ecology & Conservation, Evolution & Genetics, and Behavior & Physiology. Ecosystem Change Research Program Description: Ecosystems are principal components of research on environmental change. Observational and modeling research on ecosystems at the global scale, however, has lagged behind their counterparts for oceanic and atmospheric systems, largely because the unique challenges associated with the tremendous diversity and complexity of ecosystems. Building a successful, integrated model of the global change in the Earth system requires a reliable model of ecosystem dynamics, in combination with accurate environmental and ecological data to support and validate the model. In the Ecosystem Change Research Program (ECRP), we investigate how ecosystem processes influence global scale environmental/climatic changes such as those associated with global warming. We also seek to identify and model, with improved accuracy, the mechanisms through which global environmental/climatic change influences ecosystems. Added on: 08-Aug-2005 Hits: 15

Finnish Meteorological Institute Description:
The predecessor of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the Magnetic
Observatory of Helsinki University, was founded as early as 1838.
Meteorological observations were included in the work of the
Observatory from the very beginning; later, in 1881, the Society of
Sciences assumed responsibility for the operations, and official name
was changed to the Meteorological Central Office, under which name the
Institute began to prepare daily weather information for the newspapers
of Helsinki in 1885.
In 1919 the FMI became a research institute under the Ministry of
Agriculture and later on, in 1968, it was transferred to the Ministry
of Transport and Communications.
