Claudia Czimczik, UCI It was a very interesting conference, thanks for organizing it! Some comments: It was a little confusing to invite the press/public to the beginning of the conference rather than to the summary session. It gave the misleadig impression that there was nothing new discussed during the week. Some chairs should have been stricter in enforcing the time to leave more time for discussion but not take it from the poster session. I see some room for improvement for some of the talks in terms of design and focus. It would be good to have a summary presentation on methods in each field - if possible with a summary on the latest findings and problems. A lot of students would have appreciated to be introduced to 'inverse modeling', 'eddy flux towers' and so on. As an example, during the last conference, there was a lot of discussion on the u*-correction in eddy flux data, but there was no mention of it this time. I enjoyed the discussions at the end. However, it would have been nice to see something like a summary of the talks in that session plus 'what have we learned since the last ICDC' plus 'what we need to do next' to give it more focus.

It would be nice to cut a DVD of all of the presentations to send to the participants. Downloading all of the slides from this (good) WWW site is a bit tedious. It would be fantastic if posters also could be included. Obviously, the presenters would have to agree. Also obviously, this would be a big job!

I agree with the previous two posts (especially on moderators keeping talks within time). I'd like to make a comment regarding the wireless network connection and comment posting sections. While I think the concept is great, I found the wireless network was often too bogged down during talks, as dozens or hundreds of people were simultaneously downloading large powerpoint files, checking e-mail and posting comments. Most of the time, when I might have felt compelled to post a comment (e.g., during a talk), I found the system too slow and unresponsive to make it worth my effort. As soon as a session ended, network speeds often increased by 1 or 2 orders of magnitude. Given the growing ubiquity of laptops with wireless NICs, I would suggest you invest in upgrading the wireless network capcity. Though I suspect some of this may be limited by the contracts and facilities of the convention center, I think it would greatly increase the utility and participation in the comment boards. Also, I felt some discussion panels ignored the comments posted during discussions.

Finally, I'd like to make a suggestion to consider offering competitive travel grants to students, early career scientists and/or scientists from less-developed countries, given the high costs of travel and registration.

I had a great time, learned a lot and met a lot of bright people. I wish I had more time to look at all the posters! Thanks for doing a great job organizing ICDC7.

I also enjoyed the conference, but my opinion about the WWW options is a bit different.

1. Why is it possible to download talks without being logged in as an attendent? You had to be logged in to see the attendee list, so I thought from the very beginning this is certainly the case for any downloads.

2. Downloads of slideshows were available before the talk was given or at latest during the time the talk was given. I have seen a lot of persons who did nothing else, but downloading the talk they where not following, because they were too busy to download it. This was distracting the attention and I think this is not a good idea. It makes sense, if the material is available afterwards, but certainly NOT before it was shown. And, actually, as I understood the organizers, it was meant that stuff is only available AFTER presentation.

3. There were 46 comments given on the WWW pages. That means, that about 10% of all the people which were in Broomfield were given 1 comment. I suggest that one should think about if this makes all the efforts of putting up a wireless network worth doing. This might mean going back to old techniques (discussion face to face), but by allowing this online discussion, those using WLAN get competitive advances over those who do not have their notebooks with them (or are not wireless).

I would like to thank organizers for a delightful week of science: wonderful place, excellent program, perfect organization and a lot of funny high-tech features. The only suggestion to the next conference is to pay more attention to inter-displinary nature of CO2 science. The conference was rather multidisciplinary for many of oral presentations were seemingly addressed to narrow specialists. Pieter Tans asked speakers to use 12 slides, no more. Perhaps, it must be a strict rule. Otherwise, we will be  swamped with technical details, which are important, but hardly be understood in a second or two.
