My intuition is that to monitor productivity at large spatial scales, one need an integrated approach based upon both precise point-wise observations (enabling to check on processes) like as eddy coveriance towers AND global Remote Sensing data AND models. Building near real time models able to assimilate these various observations and to deliver assessment of productivity changes is a tempting way to go. Provided that some data can be left aside to independently evaluate the performances of suc a system (like in operational meteorlogy) The atmospheric concentration data alone do not allow to check on productivity but on net carbon balance Cheers,
