Meteorological Service of Canada
Description: The Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC) is Canada's source for meteorological information. The Service monitors water quantities, provides information and conducts research on climate, atmospheric science, air quality, ice and other environmental issues, making it an important source of expertise in these areas.

Stanford Department of Petroleum Engineering
Description: Both petroleum and geothermal energy programs are available in Stanford's Petroleum Engineering Department. Their location in the School of Earth Sciences provides unusual opportunities for interaction with geologists, geophysicists and geostatisticians. BS, MS, Engineer and PhD programs include a wide variety of courses and research topics. In addition to courses available from other departments, petroleum engineering students may choose advanced courses in well-test analysis, thermodynamics, enhanced oil recovery, geothermal engineering, reservoir simulation, reservoir engineering, flow of non-Newtonian fluids, chemical aspects of fluid production, applied mathematics and environmental aspects of petroleum products. Current research areas of interest to faculty include well test analysis, enhanced oil recovery by in-situ combustion and by steam or carbon dioxide injection, reservoir simulation, geothermal engineering, hydrocarbon phase behavior, multiphase flow in pipes, pore level displacement mechanisms, the characterization of reservoir heterogeneities and the sensitivity of oil recovery process performance to those heterogeneities.

CSU Atmospheric Science Department
Description: The Department currently has fifteen academic faculty members who guide the graduate academic program and lead exciting research activities. There are approximately 90 graduate students enrolled in the Department in a given year. These students are integral members of the research groups. Thesis and dissertation research are focused on cutting edge research sponsored by contracts and grants. A significant number of Graduate Research Assistantships are available on an annual basis. Approximately 100 other research and support staff round out the department team.

Goddard Earth Sciences and Technology Center
Description: In 2000 the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) awarded a Cooperative Agreement to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, to create a center of excellence in the Earth sciences. Through this arrangement, UMBC and its partners - Hampton University, Howard University, Caelum Research Corporation, and Northrop Grumman Corporation - began to develop collaborative research programs in all areas of the Earth sciences. GEST exists under a five-year, renewable award with GSFC. This consortium between government, university and private industry is expected not only to provide a secure "home" for Earth scientists, but to synergistically foster new directions in research and technology.

Department of Geography - University of Toronto
Description: The University of Toronto's Department of Geography is one of the oldest and largest geography departments in North America.  Founded in 1935, the department offers programs leading towards both B.A. and B.Sc. degrees at the undergraduate level and M.A., M.Sc., M.Sc. in Planning, and Ph.D. degrees at the graduate level (Geography and Program in Planning).  Currently there are over 2500 undergraduate students enrolled in geography courses each term on the St. George campus.  There are almost 150 graduate students in the department.

Center for Science and Technology Policy Research
Description: The Center for Science and Technology Policy Research was initiated within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado-Boulder in the summer of 2001 as a contribution both to the CIRES goal of “promoting science in service to society” and to the University’s vision of establishing research and outreach across traditional academic boundaries. The Center is a response to an inc reased demand by public and private decision makers for “usable” scientific information. Such information can serve decisions that have a scientific component or decisions about the structures, organizations, and priorities of science itself. At the same time, scientists have become increasingly interested in research problems that require the input of more than just a single traditional discipline. Science and technology policy research provides a mechanism to reconcile these two closely related - but not identical - trends. Such research focuses on “problems” and “decisions” to provide information that is useful and relevant in decision making. The focus on problems and decisions sets science and technology policy research apart from other efforts to integrate knowledge across traditional disciplines.

Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory
Description: GFDL's mission is to be a world leader in the production of timely and reliable knowledge and assessments on natural climate variability and anthropogenic changes and in the development of the required earth system models. GFDL works cooperatively in NOAA to advance its expert assessments of changes in national and global climate through research, improved models, and products.

Institue of Arctic Biology
Description: The Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB), established by the Alaska Legislature and the University of Alaska Board of Regents in 1962, supports faculty research and graduate education in biological, wildlife, and health sciences at UAF. Major programs include the Center for Alaska Native Health Research, Alaska Basic Neuroscience Program, Human Dimensions of Arctic Systems, and the Center for Molecular Genetic Studies of Hibernation. IAB faculty deliver the entire curriculum for undergraduate majors in Biology and Wildlife Biology, an increasing component of Chemistry and Biochemistry majors, and provide UAF undergraduates with opportunities for hands-on research experiences in the field and laboratory. IAB sponsors the weekly Life Science Seminar, and the yearly Irving-Scholander Memorial Lecture and Jay Hammond Lecture in Wildlife Biology series.
