Description: While we have much for which to look forward, we must be diligent in attending to the urgent matters that will inform the implementation of the Budget and its impact on the University of Toronto, particularly with respect to graduate expansion; as well as the significant administrative preparations for the incoming President. These are some of the many reasons why I am so honoured to serve the University as Acting President until the end of September. During this transition period, we cannot afford missteps or loss of momentum, and I have charged myself and the University's administration to dedicate all of our best efforts to ensure a good outcome from the Province's new investment in higher education, and a smooth transition for President-designate Naylor.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Popular

Description: Although NOAA was formed in 1970, the agencies that came together at that time are among the oldest in the Federal Government. The agencies included the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey formed in 1807, the Weather Bureau formed in 1870, and the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries formed in 1871. Individually these organizations were America's first physical science agency, America's first agency dedicated specifically to the atmospheric sciences, and America's first conservation agency. Much of America's scientific heritage resides in these agencies. They brought their cultures of scientific accuracy and precision, stewardship of resources, and protection of life and property to the newly formed agency.

National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences
Description: The former National Institute of Agro-Environmental Sciences (NIAES) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF) was founded in 1983 to conduct advanced and basic technological development pertaining to the control, maintenance and utilization of the agro-environment, including the biological environment. The new National Institute for Agro-Environmental Sciences (NIAES) was turned into an Independent Administrative Institution (a semi-autonomous agency) on April 1, 2001 and concentrates to fulfilling its research mission on a global scale as follows: 1) strategies to ensure stable food supplies under global environment change, 2) assuring the safety of food and environment utilizing the natural circulation function of agriculture, and 3) succession of the agro-environmental resources to future generations.

Description: The Institute of Plant Sciences of the University of Bern (IPS), Switzerland, is a teaching and research institute, consisting of five independent research sections. The education of a plant scientists at the IPS takes four years, including a diploma work (Master's thesis) of one year, a PhD thesis lasts three years. Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (CMDL)
Description: The Climate Monitoring and Diagnostics Laboratory (CMDL) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, conducts sustained observations and research related to source and sink strengths, trends and global distributions of atmospheric constituents that are capable of forcing change in the climate of Earth through modification of the atmospheric radiative environment, those that may cause depletion of the global ozone layer, and those that affect baseline air quality. CMDL accomplishes this mission primarily through long-term measurements of key atmospheric species at sites spanning the globe, including four fully-equipped Baseline Observatories. These key species include carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, nitrous oxide, surface and stratospheric ozone, halogenated compounds including CFC replacements, hydrocarbons, sulfur gases, aerosols, and solar and infrared radiation.

Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences
Description: Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences (CAMS) is one of the highest meteorological research institutions in China. CAMS is attached to China Meteorological Administration, and supported by both China Meteorological Administration and Ministry of Science and Technology of China. It was established in 1978.
