OCO-2 v11 MIP usage policy

Version 1 - Draft updated 22 July 2025

This policy covers the use of optimized fluxes, gridded molefractions, and model cosamples associated with the OCO-2 v11 MIP effort. Prior fluxes and auxiliary data (e.g. observations) have their own usage policies, which users should determine and respect.

General conditions

  1. All users must carefully track and report the version numbers and download date for the data in use. There are version numbers associated with each download package, and for each model submission. Any report or publication using these data must document the versions appropriately. Results using preliminary (“collection phase”) data must not be published, unless the MIP group gives explicit consent.

  1. MIP participants must be invited as coauthors on any publication using these results.
(consider sunset of this requirement after Baker et al published)

  1. Relevant papers describing each submission being used must be cited. Required citations will include the anticipated Baker et al. (2026, in prep) manuscript.

  1. The use of prior (unoptimized) flux data, OCO and TCCON retrievals, ObsPack measurement data, and other input datasets is covered by the usage policies of the original providers, not this document.

Collection phase

This is the preliminary period, while submissions are being collected, evaluated, and potentially revised.

Results can be freely downloaded and used by MIP participants and other users. We are making these data freely available to help in evaluating the results. We encourage their use for evaluation exercises.

All users of these data must accept that they are preliminary and are subject to revision. Users must be careful to label these data in presentations and other documents as preliminary, and definitely not the implied final, v11 MIP results.  Refer to general conditions above about documenting versions and download dates.

These preliminary data are not to be used in publications, or shared with other users. If your research is leading to a publication, assume that you will have to perform your analysis again on the final data.

Usage phase

This phase starts after submissions are closed. The MIP participants as a group will decide when the collection phase is complete, and the usage phase begins. We anticipate that the collection phase will end in September 2025.

MIP participants and other users can use these data freely for scientific publications provided they acknowledge the source of the data and cite relevant papers as described in general conditions above.

I agree to the data usage policy.
