Joseph Michalsky’s research focuses on developing and using instrumentation for the measurement of solar and infrared radiation at the Earth’s surface. He has developed methods for using commercial instrumentation to minimize the uncertainty of the measurements for an improved understanding of the surface radiation budget. He was co-developer of the multifilter rotating shadowband radiometer (MFRSR) used for the measurement of direct normal, diffuse and global horizontal irradiances in select wavelength bands to derive ambient aerosol optical properties, among other uses. He is retired from NOAA and works part time with a current focus on moderate resolution solar spectral irradiance.
