Vanessa Caicedo

Vanessa Caicedo is a research scientist in the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder and Global Radiation and Aerosols (GRAD) group within NOAA’s Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML). She received her Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Houston and later worked at the Joint Center for Earth System Technology in the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Dr. Caicedo studies boundary layer processes through the retrieval, analysis, and evaluation of ground-based remote sensing data sets, satellite products, weather forecasting, and climate models. Her work aims for a better understanding of boundary layer dynamics which is essential in improving forecasting and modeling for air quality, renewable energy, weather, and wildfire weather applications. Her research focuses on the boundary layer thermodynamic and dynamic structure, diurnal evolution, convection, pollutant distribution, land-atmosphere interactions, and other processes. She uses passive and active remote sensing of boundary layer measurements to monitor and analyze the boundary layer. Among other studies, Dr. Caicedo will work on improving retrievals of the boundary layer height using a combination of long-term and short-term lidar, aerosol, cloud, and solar radiation measurements.
