Ross grew up close to the Cascade Mountains in Washington State. He was introduced to the Arctic as a young boy, tagging along with his father who worked seasonal logistics jobs for the North Slope Borough in the 1990’s. Continuing on a similar path he went to work for an ice based Bowhead whale census in 2011 and a small mammal trapping project later that year with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Shortly after, Ross got his start working for NOAA at the Barrow observatory. In 2012 he departed for a year in Antarctica where he also worked with NOAA, before returning to work at the Barrow observatory. His interest in how things work, a hands on approach to learning and the beauty and complexity of the arctic continue to draw him to remote locations.
