The Mauna Loa system was upgraded in April 2000. The new aerosol system was run in tandem with the old system for a year so measurements could be compared. The current system improvements include: size cuts (1 and 10 um), humidity control, a nephelometer capable of back scatter measurements and the aethalometer measurements were supplemented those made by a Particle Soot/Absorption Photometer (PSAP). In 2011, a CLAP was installed and in 2013, after almost 2 years of overlapping measurements, the PSAP was replaced by the CLAP. A 7-wavelength aethalometer (AE33) was added in 2014, and an older aethalometer (AE31) was removed from service in 2017.
